International Students’ Post-Graduation Immigration Options and Related Tax Considerations

Wednesday, May 8, 2024 - Wednesday, May 8, 2024

Please join Rachel Beardsley of Fragomen and Jenny Longman of Patterson Belknap for a discussion on tax and immigration considerations for international families. By way of background, the children of many high-net-worth families choose to study at U.S. universities on student visas. After graduation, these children are often interested in remaining in the U.S. to start their professional careers, though they require a work visa or permanent resident (green card) status to do so. Also, as students, the children generally have “exempt” status and hence are not treated as U.S. tax residents – but they generally become U.S. tax residents after the end of their degree program if they remain in the U.S.

As such, this session will delve into:

  • Work visa and permanent residence (green card) immigration options for international students
  • Tax consequences of the various visa/immigration options
