November 3: “Don’t Let the Door Hit You on the Way Out: Planned and Accidental Departures from the US Tax System”
The panelists will discuss various aspects of individuals and trusts ceasing to be taxed as US persons. From simple changes of residence of non-citizens before a liquidity event to taxable expatriations of US citizens and long-term residents to conversions of trusts to foreign trusts, opportunities and traps await in this immensely complicated and misunderstood area of tax practice. This session will focus on key issues facing clients who wish to depart and how to avoid accidental/inadvertent departures, as well as an overview of common issues that arise with clients’ investment portfolios during this process
